Mesh Deer Fence

Deer can cause significant damage to crops, gardens, and property. To prevent deer from accessing your property, you need a deer fence. One of the most popular types of deer fences is mesh deer fencing. In this article, we will discuss how mesh deer fencing works, its size, cost, comparison to other deer fences, and how to install it to work best.

What is Mesh Deer Fencing?

Mesh deer fencing is a type of fence that is designed to prevent deer from accessing a particular area. The fence is made of a durable mesh material that is strong enough to withstand the weight and pressure of deer trying to push through it. Mesh deer fencing comes in different sizes, materials, and designs, so it can be customized to fit your specific needs.

How Well Does Mesh Deer Fencing Work?

Mesh deer fencing is an effective way to keep deer out of an area. The fence's design and material make it difficult for deer to jump over or push through. Mesh deer fencing can be used to protect gardens, orchards, and other areas where deer may cause damage. The effectiveness of mesh deer fencing depends on the height of the fence and the strength of the mesh material. Typically, a mesh deer fence that is at least 8 feet tall is recommended for optimal results.

Size of Mesh Deer Fencing

Mesh deer fencing comes in different sizes, ranging from 4 feet to 12 feet tall. The size of the fence you need depends on the area you want to protect and the size of the deer population in your area. If you have a lot of deer in your area, you may want to consider a taller fence to ensure that they cannot jump over it.

Cost of Mesh Deer Fencing

The cost of mesh deer fencing varies depending on the size of the fence and the material used. Generally, mesh deer fencing is more expensive than other types of deer fences, such as electric or polypropylene fences. However, mesh deer fencing is more durable and long-lasting than other types of deer fences, so it may be a more cost-effective option in the long run.

Comparison to Other Deer Fences

Mesh deer fencing is one of the most popular types of deer fences because it is effective and long-lasting. Electric fences are another popular type of deer fence, but they require more maintenance and are not as effective as mesh deer fencing. Polypropylene fences are a more affordable option than mesh deer fencing, but they are not as durable or long-lasting.

How to Install Mesh Deer Fencing to Work Best

To ensure that your mesh deer fence works as effectively as possible, it is important to install it correctly. Here are some tips to help you install your mesh deer fence:

  1. Choose the right height: As mentioned earlier, a mesh deer fence that is at least 8 feet tall is recommended for optimal results.

  2. Choose the right material: Mesh deer fencing is typically made of polypropylene, which is durable and long-lasting. Choose a high-quality mesh material that can withstand the weight and pressure of deer trying to push through.

  3. Install sturdy posts: Use sturdy posts to support your mesh deer fence. You may need to use metal posts to ensure that the fence is secure.

  4. Install the fence at an angle: Installing the fence at an angle can help prevent deer from jumping over it.

  5. Consider adding a top rail: Adding a top rail to your mesh deer fence can help prevent deer from pushing the fence down.

Mesh deer fencing, also known as invisible fencing, or nearly invisible fencing comes in several colors, strengths, opening sizes, heights, and materials. Heavier grade fencing will withstand direct impact or attempts to climb over or though it. The two main types of invisible fencing are polypropylene and the other is pvc-coated metal hexagrid mesh.

The eight foot fencing works well, especially in wooded areas where it can easily be attached to trees.  From a distance, the mesh is almost invisible, blending into the objects and shadows in the background.  The black mesh is especially desirable to blend into the scenery.  When lighter the supports used, the less visible the fence will be also.

When using mesh fencing, you should enclose the entire area you want to protect. If you leave an opening, deer can enter then do damage to the fence trying to get out when scared. The maximum span for this type of fencing is 35 feet, with a preferred distance of at least 10-25 feet, depending on type.

After that, fencing should be pulled tight and attached to posts or trees with fencing staples. Galvanized ground staples, such as Dewitt's Ground Staples should also be used every 12 feet to keep deer from sliding underneath. Because the netting is much more flexible than wire, it can be moved around to dip into low areas and pinned down where there are holes.

Black 12 ga Monofilament Fence Wire - 1000 ft

Use this 1000 ft reel of black 8 gauge deer fence monofilament wire at the top and bottom of your deer fence. The wire is UV stabilized to prevent breakdown from the sun and weather. Monofilament needs to be tightened with a Round Monofilament Tightner to provide the needed support for the fencing.

There are also 333 ft rolls available. Mesh fencing works on the principle that the deer can't determine how tall the fence is and therefore can't gauge the proper take-off and landing. This confusion by the deer seems to be related to the poor visibility of the fencing. From the deer's eye level the fencing seems much taller.

Fence posts should be 11-12 foot tall and made of metal, wood, or other sturdy material. Fiberglass posts are not recommended, except in low deer pressure residential areas. As with electric fencing, it is recommended that you attach 12 inch streamers of material, foil, orange flagging tape, or other high visibility material at 3-5 feet high and every 4-12 feet so that the deer see the fencing.

This can be removed after a few months when you are sure the deer are aware of the fence. The netting should be inspected on a regular basis and tears repaired with some type of cable tie.

Mesh deer fencing is an effective and long-lasting way to keep deer out of an area. It comes in different sizes and materials, and its effectiveness depends on the height of the fence and the strength of the mesh material. While it may be more expensive than other types of deer fences, mesh deer fencing is a cost-effective option.
