Turfgrass ID Shortcourse

Regardless of the type of lawn or landscape services you are offering, you should be able to identify the type of grass you are working with. You don't need to know the variety, but you should know at least the Genus. Preferably Genus and species. You can first narrow down the grass type by region of the country if you live in the North or South. If you live in the transitional zone you may have any grass type.

To be a professional, you should be able to identify grasses.  This course can also be used to train employees on turf identification.

How often does a customer ask you, as a professional, to identifiy their grass and you really aren't sure?

You need to know the turgrass type when you put the customer in your CRM, when you are deciding how high to mow, what weed control to use, to fill out the soil test form, and when you talk to the customer.  Learning to ID turf is non-negotiable for a lawn professional.

Honestly, I am a professional and sometimes I am not 100% sure what turfgrass I am looking at until I take a hard look.  Especially in the transition zone where it could be anything.  There is nothing wrong with keeping a "cheat sheet" with you or using an onlline app.

Being able to determine the grass type without help not only saves time, but can help you save face.  Your customer may be standing right beside you when you are talking about the their lawn and you will need to call it by name.

Weed controls are often turf specific and you can do a lot of damage on a lawn if you don't know what type it is.

I know that all professionals should know at least the Genus and probably the species of the lawn to make the right choices to keep it healthy.  With Zoysia, knowing which type might be necessary because some are more sensitive to herbicides.

If you or your employee is guesing at lawn type and you guess wrong and mistake Centipede for St. Augustine or Bentgrass for Tif Burmuda and you damage the lawn with herbicide then what? One expense mistake like that, the loss of one customer, that is the loss of hundreads of dollars.  I suggest you spend the lunch money for the course, learn to ID your grasses, use the lessons to train employees, and keep on growing!
