Does Electronic Deer Control Really Work?

Does Electronic Deer Control Really Work?

Electronic deer control: Does it really work? The answer to this question is: the jury is still out on this one. The reason that this subject is so highly controversial is that electronic pest control DOES work, the real dilemma is for how long.

The reason behind the mixed message lays in the way electronic pest control works. Electronic deer control devices are small, innocuous little do dads that sit by, seemingly doing nothing. At least nothing we mere mortals can detect. What it’s doing is emitting a high frequency sound that is undetectable by humans. But, is very easily heard by pests like rats, mice, birds, dogs, cats, etc. Bugs don’t hear it, but bugs don’t hear anything.

The sound that the device makes is designed to be extremely irritating and uncomfortable to the target pest like deer. This makes deer want to spend time somewhere else. And, for the most part, it does. At least in the short run.

Drawbacks

The major shortcoming of the device is that its designers never took into account Darwin’s theory of adaptation. As disturbing as it may sound, humans should show a little appreciation to the pests of the world. They are the epitome of adaptation at its best. They have survived climate changes, developed immunity to poisons, overcome physical obstacles, etc. Electronic pest control devices are nothing more than a minor annoyance after about a week or so of exposure. As a matter of fact, after several weeks of exposure, the pests show absolutely no recognition of the sound at all. That’s right, they’ve completely tuned it out and the gadget is now completely useless.

One strategy you can employ if the electronic deer control device is the way you choose to go would be to turn it on intermittently. This works better than running it all the time.  The advantage is it takes the pests longer to become accustomed to the sound.  However, they will eventually learn that the sound, albeit annoying, does not pose any appreciable danger to them. Deer will learn to ignore it anyway, but at least this way you’ll get more use out of it before it becomes obsolete.

Instead of investing in an electronic pest control device, you might be better served by sticking with a tried and true method of pest repellent, like taste and odor chemicals. Try the devices with predator urine and deer resistant plants.

If you want to try electronic deer control in your area, here are 3 that are top rated and may be worth a try.

Deer Chaser Electronic Unit

Deer can be a nuisance when they invade a property and cause devastation by trampling and devouring vegetation on farmland, gardens, orchards and yards. They may even forage through garbage cans strewing trash around the area. Property structures and vehicles often times receive damage in addition to vegetation. In many places these animals cause thousands of dollars in damage annually. Deer herds also carry ticks and may harbor harmful diseases. There is a humane and harmless way to protect environments and prevent these unwelcome guests from visiting.

The Deer Chaser is a modern electronic deer control echnological device that uses painless sound transmitted by radio, along with bright pulsing light to intimidate deer and discourage them from entering the property. The device protects expensive vegetation, and prevents property damage without using fences. Deer Chaser can be placed anywhere on the property including gardens and yards. The electronic device wards off deer populations without posing a threat to children or pets.

The Deer Chaser operates on 3 D cell batteries and is easily mounted anywhere and at any height. The unit protects areas up to 25 feet away and in a 110 degree radius. The light and sound alarms are completely adjustable to function anywhere from every 15 seconds to every 7 minutes. The device is small and compact measuring 10.25” x 10.25” x 4” and weighs slightly more than 1 pound.

Deer Chaser Reviews

Deer Chaser electronic device has been around for many years.  Some of the advantages customers like is the volume can be adjusted with the dial that turns on the radio. We usually put the volume about 1/2 of max volume to save the batteries. Oh yes, when the motion detector is triggered on both the radio and light come on. You can adjust how long they stay on.

Reviews include this one "This product works better than any other deer deterrent that I've ever tried. Since I installed it near the bird feeders (about a month ago), I haven't had a single deer eating the bird seed. Prior to this, there would be deer visits multiple times a day and I'd have to constantly refill the feeders. On the rare times that a bird will set off the device, they do not seem to be bothered by it. I would highly recommend."  The downside to this control is also an upside.  When the radio is turned on loud, the deer stay away but the neighbors may also hear the radio.

Bird-X DG Ultrasonic Deer Controller

The Bird-X DG ultrasonic deer controller keeps deer and other animals out of an area by emitting a high-pitched sound that is irritating to animals but cannot by heard by most humans. It is a humane solution for keeping troublesome animals such as deer, cats, dogs, raccoons, rabbits and skunks out of the yard and garden.

This deer controller has a waterproof cover so that it can withstand extended outdoor use in different kinds of weather. It comes with a 50-foot AC cord but can also run on 4 C batteries. It has a motion detector, but must be run on batteries to take advantage of this feature.

The sound available on the Bird-X DG ultrasonic deer controller can be adjusted to different frequencies to target different animals. Some of the frequencies are ultrasonic but others can be heard by humans. For use of sonic frequencies, the controller should be placed in a location where it will not be annoying to humans.

This product can be installed anywhere and one Bird-X DG ultrasonic deer controller can repel deer in up to a 4000 square foot area. If you need to protect a larger area, more than one Bird-X DG may be required.

Using the Bird-X DG ultrasonic deer controller helps keep deer from destroying gardens and landscaping and eliminates the need to build a high fence to keep them out. The deer controller is more humane than chemical solutions, and when operated in AC mode can be used year round, even during the winter.

Havaheart 5250 Deer Control

The Havaheart 5250 Deer Control system is an electronic deer repellant that works a lot like an electric fence you might use to keep your dog in the yard.

Here's how it works: Place the Havaheart 5250 Deer Control post in an area of your yard where deer are known to cross. Havaheart's acorn-scented deer-lure will attract the animals to the post, where they will receive a gentle 400-volt shock - no more than an annoying tingle, but enough to let them know they're not welcome. From a distance, the green and silver posts blend nicely with outdoor foliage, while their red tops alert humans who get close that they have shock power.

A Havaheart 5250 Deer Control set comes with three posts, acorn-cented aromatic lure, instructions, cotton balls for applying the lure, and order form for additional lure. Each post requires two AA batteries, which must be purchased separately. Because of the Havaheart 5250 Deer Control's efficiency, one set of batteries should last at least a year.

With an approximate coverage of 1,200 feet, the Havaheart 5250 Deer Control system is not only the most high-tech, efficient and humane option for deer control, it is also one of the most thorough means of keeping your yard pest-free.
